Deregister your motorhome before selling it?

motorhome deregistration

Advantages of deregistration before the sale

When selling a motorhome, the question often arises as to whether you should deregister your motorhome before selling it or handing it over to the buyer. For safety reasons, we generally recommend deregistration before the sale. The following advantages result from early deregistration:

  • Advantage 1: No liability for insurance claims after the handover of your sold motorhome. The insurance expires with the deregistration and the premiums payable are waived. As long as the motorhome is insured in your name, you are the contact person for the police and authorities and, in the worst case, you are also liable for traffic accidents and other damage.
  • Advantage 2: Deregistering a motorhome is very inexpensive and does not require a great deal of effort. It can therefore be worth deregistering a motorhome even if it has only been parked for a short time, as the taxes and insurance premiums are usually significantly higher. It is particularly worthwhile to deregister your motorhome if it will be parked for a longer period of time.

Disadvantages of deregistration before the sale

Even if the advantages outweigh the disadvantages, there are a few to bear in mind:

  • Disadvantage 1: Privately interested parties cannot test drive the motorhome if it is already deregistered. It may be possible to take a short drive at moderate speed on private property where the German Road Traffic Act (StVO) does not apply. The road traffic regulations only apply where there is no public traffic.
  • Disadvantage 2: You need a parking space for your deregistered motorhome that is not on public land, as the insurance expires immediately after deregistration. A private property or a parking space (e.g. a hall) especially for motorhomes is suitable here.

How to deregister your motorhome

To be able to register your motorhome in order to prepare it for sale, you must deregister it at the registration office. The following documents are required for this:

  • Identity card or alternatively passport with registration certificate
  • License plate number of the motorhome
  • Registration certificate part I and II (colloquially known as vehicle registration certificate and vehicle registration document)

The costs for deregistration are usually less than 20 euros. You may also be able to deregister your motorhome online before selling it. To do this, you will need an ID card with an "eID online function". In addition, the vehicle registration document, registration certificate and license plate must contain hidden security codes. You can find detailed information on online deregistration in the ADAC guide Deregister your motorhome online.

Play it safe when selling a motorhome

As you can see, there are good reasons for deregistering your motorhome before selling it. The safety aspect is particularly important here, which is why we recommend early deregistration. If you sell to a reputable motorhome dealer, they can easily take a test drive with your deregistered motorhome with so-called red license plates and even transfer it deregistered. This saves you stress and hassle and allows you to sell your motorhome without risk.
